2020 Renault Duster Road Test

2020 Renault Duster Road Test

Much refined Duster offers big value

Since the launch of the first-generation Renault Duster, it’s been a major sales success due to the high levels of value for money it offers. The second-generation Duster seems much refined, yet still offers all of the value that have made the Duster so popular amongst buyers. Trumping most of its competitors not only for price, but also for practicality and space, the Duster remains a good choice for those seeking to buy an affordable SUV.

Background and condition of vehicle:

  • With a mere 10 450km on the clock our Duster proved to be as good as new.
  • No issues whatsoever were noticed during our test, with the exterior as well as the interior still in a perfect condition.

Performance and Economy:

  • Our Duster Prestige came fitted with a 1.5-litre turbodiesel engine.
  • Peak power might sound low at 80kW, but with 250Nm of maximum torque on tap, pulling power proved to be decent.
  • Although not class leading performance, a 0-100km/h sprint time of 11.9-seconds should keep most people happy.
  • The diesel unit certainly delivers good low-down grunt and aided by the 6-speed automatic gearbox, city driving seemed reasonably effortless.
  • The Renault Duster recently competed in the 2 500km long 2019 WesBank Fuel Economy Tour in partnership with FNB and duly won its class. Returning a fuel economy figure of just 5.06-litres per 100km, it proved that it’s without a doubt one of the most fuel-efficient family vehicles on sale in South Africa at the moment.

How does it drive?

  • Although only driven by the front wheels, it does offer decent ground clearance, which allows the Duster to tackle reasonably rough roads without scraping the underside.

  • Most people will also like the very light steering action, which makes driving in and around town and squeezing into those tight parking spaces just a little bit more effortless.

  • Overall the Duster delivers a fairly soft, quiet and comfortable ride, which compares very favorably with its competitors at this price point.

Inside the vehicle:

  • The interior for the most part is visually appealing and well laid out.

  • Although much improved and refined compared to the first generation, I did feel that there is still a little too much plastic trim around to truly give the Duster a premium feel.

  • The Duster is presently one of the most affordable family cars on offer in South Africa.

  • In Pristine guise the Duster comes very well appointed with luxury features that included features like an Infotainment system, satellite navigation, leather upholstery and much more.

  • Climate control air-conditioning                                      - PDC with rear camera

  • Central Locking                                                                        - Electric windows

  • Multi-function steering wheel                                            - Rain Sensor

  • Multi-media infotainment system                                    - Eco driving mode

  • Apple Car Play and Android Auto                                     - Keyless go

Space and Practicality:

  • Compared to what is on offer at this price point, the Duster is by far one of the most spacious.

  • The interior felt quite roomy and there is enough space to accommodate up to 5 adults.

  • Boot space especially impressed, quoted at 478-litres.

Practicality:

  • At this price point there certainly is no SUV that offers more features, space, practicality or better fuel consumption.
  • And therefore the Duster remains King regarding value for money in the SUV market at the moment.
  • Our pre-owned Duster at a saving of around R 30 000 compared to new builds on the already good value for money the Duster offers.

  • Fantastic fuel economy
  • Spacious and practical
  • Loaded with luxury features

X Lacks premium feel due to hard plastic trim
