2019 Isuzu D-Max Road Test

Much refined Isuzu a good pre-owned buy.

Background and condition of vehicle:

  • Renowned to be as tough as nails it was no surprise that after only 24 300km of mileage our Isuzu not only still looked like new, but also drove as well as the day it left the assembly line at the factory.
  • Our pre-owned Isuzu also comes fitted with four brand new all-terrain General Grabber tyres.
  • It’s also good to know that a look at the rubberized load area revealed that this Isuzu has certainly not been used for any hard labour at all.

Performance and Economy:

  • The 3-litre Turbo Diesel engine pumps out a 130kW and 380Nm of torque and comes coupled to a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
  • Slightly down on performance compared to its rivals like the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.
  • Promises very good fuel consumption figures of 7.8-litres per 100km.
  • Enough low-down grunt ensures good tractability on the road.
  • The 6-speed auto box offers well-spaced ratio’s and seemed refined enough for a double cab bakkie of this nature.

How does it drive?

  • Like expected from a double cab bakkie the ride was always going to be quite firm.
  • In its latest form you do notice the refinement compared to previous models and overall the ride proved comfortable.
  • Engine and wind noise have also been greatly reduced, although like with many of its rivals the large all-terrain tyres do remain audible when travelling at higher speeds.

Inside the vehicle:

  • The interior reveals further enhancements and overall refinement.
  • The interior is quite attractive and now comes with leather trim on the dash and door trim.
  • The centre-console also features a state-of-the-art infotainment system with all the features you need.
  • The latest refinements certainly put it on par with most of its main rivals.
  • Luxury and safety features were comprehensive and included the following.
  • Dual Zone climate control air-conditioning             - PDC with rear camera
  • Central Locking                                                          - Electric windows
  • Multi-function leather steering wheel                      - Rain Sensor
  • On-Board trip computer                                            - Auto Headlights on
  • Multi-media infotainment system                             - Day time driving light
  • Cruise control                                                             - Isofix rear seats
  • USB and Aux ports                                                     - Hill decent control
  • Bluetooth phone connectivity                                   - Auto headlights on
  • USB and Aux ports and 12V connectors                   - ABS with EBD and brake assist
  • Electric adjustable seats                                            - Leather upholstery
  • Lockable differential                                                  - Front, side and curtain airbags (6)
  • ABS with EBD and brake assist                                 - Stability Control
  • Key-less entry                                                             - Roll-Bar and side-steps

Space and Practicality:

  • Like it’s rivals the cabin of the Isuzu will seat four of five tall adults relatively easily and in comfort.
  • The load area was rubberized and seemed in a perfect condition.
  • The Isuzu is capable of towing a braked trailer of up to 3.5-tons and the rated payload of 1 085kg also compares well with its competitors.
  • I also liked the 4 tie-down brackets in the load area.

Resaons to consider the Isuzu D-Max:

  • The Isuzu D-Max still remains a great alternative compared to the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.
  • Now much more refined than ever, it still retains the reliability, durability and ruggedness that Isuzu buyers have come to love over the years.
  • This particular Isuzu was well cared for and is therefore a very good pre-owned buy.
  • Tough as nails
  • Comprehensive Luxury and Safety Features
  • Fuel Economy
  • Good Value at price

X Performance not as good as some of main rivals
